BANYAN SYSTEMS TO EXPAND PLATFORM SUPPORT FOR VINES
Hardware Group Shifts Emphasis from Servers
to Add-ons for Industry-Standard Hardware Platforms
WESTBORO, Mass., October 15, 1990 -- Banyan Systems, the leading
supplier of distributed network operating system software for corporate-
wide PC networks, today announced that it plans to expand the support
and certification of network server hardware platforms from a variety of
manufacturers. The company's Hardware Products Group will shift its full
emphasis to hardware add-ons for the growing number of industry-standard
hardware platforms, enabling these platforms to further capitalize on
the power of VINES.
According to Banyan President and Chief Executive Officer, David C.
Mahoney, "The growing acceptance of VINES in departmental and corporate-
wide networks has provided us with the opportunity to focus our efforts
on our strategic advantages. Technologically, Banyan markets the most
comprehensive network operating system available today for corporate-
wide PC networks. By concentrating our R&D and marketing resources on
VINES, we ensure that it retains its competitive edge as the industry's
most open, standards-based network operating system, able to run on the
widest possible range of hardware platforms from the world's leading
vendors."

Evolution of New Server Platforms a Critical Factor
When Banyan first introduced VINES six years ago, the industry's leading
PC and minicomputer manufacturers had no systems to fulfill the network
server requirement. PC's lacked the horsepower and memory storage;
minicomputers were proprietary and excessively expensive for the task.
While Banyan's strategic thrust was the development and enhancement of
VINES, the company's networking technologies were so new and so advanced
that only Banyan clearly understood it well enough to build a suitable
server platform. In fact, Banyan was the first company to produce a
product designated as a "network server". Today, by contrast, there are
a multitude of vendors producing server products. As a result, Banyan is
free to concentrate resources on its core products: an open, standards-
based network operating system and associated products.
At the same time, the company is building strong business relationships,
including strategic partnerships with leading hardware vendors, such as
Compaq Computer Corporation and IBM. Recently, Banyan announced a close
strategic relationship with Compaq in conjunction with the shipment of
VINES SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing). VINES SMP is the industry's
first symmetric multi-processing network operating system (NOS) and the
first NOS that takes full advantage of the multi-processor COMPAQ
SYSTEMPRO. More recently, Banyan announced support for IBM's new
medialess PS/2 workstations and Remote Program Load (RPL) network
adaptor cards. This announcement was made concurrently with the release
of the new IBM products.

As a result of these types of relationships, Banyan customers will be
able to choose virtually any hardware platform as a server, and still be
able to run VINES. Early this year, Banyan instituted a platform
certification program to stimulate qualification of new 386- and i486-
based PCs as VINES network servers. Currently, nearly 40 platforms are
certified as VINES servers.
Favorable Reaction Seen By Banyan's Customer and VAR Communities
"We commend Banyan on its decision to concentrate on VINES, which is an
integral part of our office strategy. The strengthened focus on the
software is certain to help keep them as one of the leaders in the
corporate-wide PC networking industry," according to Art Beckman,
Manager of Information Technology Services, Pacific Gas & Electric
Company, San Francisco, CA, one of Banyan's largest customers with more
than 10,000 connected nodes.
Said Steve Deckrow, President, Information Decisions, Inc., Grand
Rapids, MI, and a member of Banyan's Reseller Council, "Banyan has
always emphasized the value and benefits of VINES, and the fact that the
company is concentrating its efforts on providing it for the widest
choice of hardware platforms can only be good news for us and for our
customers."
Preeminence of VINES is Major Motivation to Concentrate on Software
VINES and its associated add-on software and hardware products have been

networking PCs in applications ranging from departmental to complex
corporate-wide scales. Various attributes have been regularly singled
out by customers and the industry as models for building corporate-wide
PC networks. Among these important attributes are:
* Open, standards-based architecture (POSIX compliant and built from
UNIX System V)
* Ease of implementation, management and use
* Full integration of services and resources
* Advanced local and wide area connections to PCs, minicomputers, and
mainframes
* Superior scalability
* Unequalled directory services (StreetTalk)
* True distributed network operating system (DNOS) processing capability
Most recently the company has received recognition for having the
industry's:
* Best applications toolkit (LAN Times, May, 1990)
* Best 25 Mhz 386 server software (PC Week, Sept. 3, 1990)
* Best vendor support for its resellers (VAR Business, Oct. 1989 and
Oct. 1990).
* Best directory services (PC Week, June 25, 1990)
* Best e-mail package (PC Week, Aug. 13, 1990)
Major industry firsts for Banyan VINES in 1990 have been the first
symmetric multi-processing version of a PC-based network operating
system and first multilingual network operating system.
Manufacture and Support of CNS Servers Continues
Banyan is committed to the continued production, enhancement, marketing,
and support of its existing CNS line of corporate network servers. "The
CNS is a high-performance server platform optimized for VINES. We
believe it will remain a viable product for some time, and we intend to
support it and enhance it," Mahoney said.

This position has been demonstrated by recent introductions of a 5-drive
CNS model and a new 32 MB add-on memory board for the CNS. Because CNS
servers incorporate the SCSI architecture, Banyan anticipates making
available enhancements to permit further disk and tape expansion.
Finally, the VINES software used on the CNS is a version of VINES for
386 and 486 platforms. Consequently, new revisions of VINES are planned
for CNS platforms as long as VINES for 386 and 486 is supported. The
company also plans to offer CNS customers a convenient upgrade path for
the future.
Add-On Hardware Products are Wave of Future
for Banyan's Hardware Business
To promote VINES technology, Banyan has developed and marketed a variety
of hardware add-on products, such as the ICA Intelligent Communications
Adaptor family of high-performance serial communications cards. These
products can be used with any industry-standard PC platforms to enhance
their functionality in running VINES.
As the number of VINES-certified platforms continues to grow and as the
number of VINES installations continue to increase, the need for these
add-on products is expected to grow. Recent announcements in this area
include a new MicroChannel ICA board, which joined the original AT Bus
version of the product, and a new V.35 adaptor for linking high speed
modems to either ICA board.
